GA in The Movies
"James Bond" pilot J.W. "Corkey" Fornof,
Be Appearing At the LoPresti Static Display During
AOPA Aviation Summit In Tampa, November 5th - 7th.

Few things compare to the excitement of an airplane performing extraordinary maneuvers to create a suspenseful movie. No one knows more about creating this realistic cinematography than J.W. "Corkey" Fornof.  Corkey literally wrote the book on film production for general aviation. His credentials as a Hollywood Aerial Stunt Pilot, Camera Man, Aerial Coordinator and an Aerial Director, are well known in Hollywood. Whether it is doubling for Catherine Zeta-Jones (at a thousand feet) or creating a Hollywood scene to keep you on the edge of your seat, Corkey is the master of aviation thrillers.

Do you remember the classic movie scene where James Bond (aka Roger Moore) flies a BD5 jet through a hanger sideways in Octopussy? If you do, then you are already familiar with his classic creations.

"Corkey's" list of featured movie stunts includes Harrison Ford's 6 Days/7 Nights, John Travolta's Face Off, Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible II, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park and Robert Redford and Demi Moore's Indecent Proposal.  "Corkey" is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, the Motion Picture Pilots Association, and holds a current Motion Picture/Television Flight Operations Manual for the FAA.  He's been spotted in over 100 commercials and MTV.

SpeedSpats for Piper
A Personal Story

LoPresti SpeedSpat Product and Performance Report
Arrow-II PA-28R-200
May 30, 2009

Before getting into the report, let me say that I am not affiliated with LoPresti. My comments and findings are based on the installation of a set of LoPresti SpeedMerchants SpeedSpats (main landing gear fairings) on my personal aircraft, a 1974 Arrow-II. There is nothing special about this Arrow. For those who want to compare performance figures to their own Arrow, mine has a high-time engine and it has a 3-blade Hartzell propeller.

Why LoPresti SpeedSpats? The answer arrived from a number of reasons that fit me (but perhaps will not fit others). First, the Arrow fits our family lifestyle the best and I have no interest in purchasing another aircraft with faster inherent speed at this time. That being said, I wanted a little faster cruise performance – and that pointed me in the direction of speed modifications for the Arrow. LoPresti happens to be located at my airport home base of Sebastian, FL (they just relocated from Vero Beach) – which caused me to favor their products versus others on the market. Of all the LoPresti speed mod products for the Arrow-II, the SpeedSpats and the new engine cowling promised (according to LoPresti’s literature) the greatest speed gains. And since the cost of the cowling is more than my pocketbook can handle, I focused on the SpeedSpats. LoPresti offered a great discount on their products at Sun n Fun this year – and that triggered the decision to purchase the SpeedSpats.

The LoPresti SpeedSpats come as a kit with four (4) molded fiberglass parts with a white gel-coat type product coating on the outside; and bare fiberglass on the inside. The kit comes with a tube of special adhesive; one pair of Latex gloves; an ample supply of pull-rivets; a 0.125” drill bit; installation instructions; STC information; and set of master drawings.

This photo shows the fairing part that is attached to the underside of the flap

Installation is straightforward and easily accomplished by anyone that knows how to hold a cordless drill. Note: this installation is considered a major alteration and as such the work needs to be conducted by or under the supervision of an A&P. Ultimately a Form 337 is needed to complete the required FAA paperwork; and it must be signed by an IA.

This photo shows the installation of the part that partially fits inside the wheel well. Cleco’s are used to hold the part in place while pull-rivets are installed. Masking tape outlines the part to protect the surrounding area from the adhesive. The flap actuator has been removed so the flap can be dropped to make it easier to install the pull-rivets.

The installation requires some cutting and sanding of the parts to make them fit. Cutting is accomplished with a simple band saw or hack saw. Sanding is done with 12” long block of wood and sand paper.

After the parts are fitted, holes are drilled to receive the rivets. The parts are temporarily held in place with 1/8” Cleco fasteners. The surfaces of the aircraft where the parts will be bonded are cleaned with Alcohol to allow the adhesive to bond properly. The two-part adhesive/sealer comes in a handy container that allows mixing the components inside the original packaging. The adhesive is then spread onto the fiberglass parts where they come in contact with the aircraft. Position the parts using Cleco’s; and then begin installing the 80-something rivets that secure the completed parts.

Note the LoPresti “Hubba Hubba” Hub Caps (a gift from my son last Christmas)
The Hubba Hubba Hub Caps have a curvature that adds to the aerodynamics of the SpeedSpat installation

It took about 8-manhours to do the work (including 1-hour of head scratching). I did all the work with an A&P/IA supervising. A licensed LoPresti installation shop would certainly do the job in less time.

How Do They Work? Actually, they do well! After hearing several reports that speed mods in general are not worth the cost or effort – I was anxious to learn if the LoPresti SpeedSpats offered measurable performance improvements. Before installing the SpeedSpats I flew the aircraft at various altitudes and power settings to establish a base line of performance numbers. After the installation I flew the same flight profile and recorded the numbers.

More DeltaHawk Info

For aviators today, going green is almost an imperative. In fact, OUR imperative is to insure the privilege to fly by insuring our fuel supply. You've probably heard about our DeltaHawk Diesel project. But there's more. LoPresti is installing a DH Diesel in a Cirrus SR20 and we're experimenting with biodiesel made from algae. If we're successful, we will have an inexpensive and highly efficient fuel for General Aviation. The DH solution will get 30-40% more miles per gallon, all  while extending engine life by the natural lubricity of the fuel. These are exciting times. Make certain you stay tuned!

 First Saturday at LoPresti
November 7th - Sebastian Florida (X26)

"LoPresti First Saturday on November 7th, will be Glenn Curtis.  Glenn is known as "Dr. Glenn" of Love Doctors fame."

First Saturday Fly-in Event will be held Saturday, November 7th at our facility in Sebastian.  LoPresti Aviation will guest host speaker and local resident Glenn Curtis.  Many of you know him as Doctor Glenn of the Love Doctors radio show.  What many may not know is that the Love Doctors Charities is a cornerstone  element of the Love Doctors show.  The charities have raised well over a million dollars that has been spent on good works in our local community.  The full breakfast buffet begins at 8:15 am with steaming hot cups of coffee and everything from pancakes, eggs & bacon to fresh fruits and delicious muffins.  Breakfast is followed by Glenn’s presentation at 10-11:30 a.m. This month's event will benefit Glenn’s  personal charity choice, The Love Doctors Charities.  (A $5 donation is requested)

In addition to the annual toy distribution, the charity provides a wide range of community assistance throughout the Treasure Coast.  This year the charity has helped a family that lost everything in a fire, offered rent assistance to a single mother, sponsored two high school air force cadets, aided a senior citizen battling cancer giving area teachers school supplies and annually sends several kids to diabetes camp.

Teacher Gift Card recipient Denise Davis
of Gifford Middle School. Denise teaches ESE.

Come to First Saturday and hear the great stories and behind the scenes laughter that his characteristic of the Love Doctors Show.  Glenn has great stories and if you have never been to a Love Doctors event you are in for a real treat.    Woven into this tapestry of joviality will be stories of the stewardship and giving that has made the Love Doctors a force to be reckoned with not just in radio, but in our community at large.

Doctor Glenn got the "bug" for radio in 1976 & 1977 while he was a junior and senior at Vero Beach High School.  He took broadcasting classes and spent lunch hour as a DJ. on the school radio station.  After high school, he attended broadcasting school in Sarasota, and returned to the Treasure Coast to work at WTTB, WFTP, WSTU and WAVW (Wave Country 92.7)While at WAVW, Glenn met Rich Dickerson and teamed up to form "The Love Doctors".  From there the team went to WKGR (The Gater) and on to WZZR, where they have been since 1991. A few years later, the duo formed Love Doctors Charities to help residents of the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches.  The Love Doctors Charities has raised more than $1,249,000 and the 2008 annual Xmas toy drive raised 250,000 dollars and provided toys to over 9,000 area children.

LoPresti First Saturday is about connecting aviation to modern America.

As a boy, Roy LoPresti hung around airports and airplanes every chance he got. However, what was possible and even common 60 years ago, is neither today. Roy bemoaned the loss of innocence and the lack of places for kids and pilots to meet.   So we opened "LeRoy's Cafe" as a place for pilots and the community to "Hang Out". Later we added First Saturday to formally bring the two together once a month with a full breakfast, an interesting topic and a guest speaker. Any proceeds we generate goes to a charity or a worthy cause. In this way we get to give back to the community and provide a place for pilots to gather. Best of all we get to do what Roy wanted most...to share the dream of flight.
